I admit it… I cheated! Our local hardware store was having a major deal I'm hanging baskets for Mother's Day and I cannibalized them for my pots. No I don't have the variety that I normally do but they are full and mature and beautiful and best of all super easy. I did break two of them up to combine them but all in all it was a much easier and faster process than past years and that would do it again!

I thought I would share with you the summer pots I just planted and some of the things I think about while planting and arranging them. Here are my little helpers. They are great at holding plants for me and filling in the dirt afterwards.
I have found great luck with putting my herbs in my front window boxes which protects them from bunnies and deer and also doesn't allow some of the more aggressive herbs, such as mint, to spread. It also has the bonus of looking beautiful and projecting homey-ness and culinary prowess in my mind, which makes me happy.
I mix them with brightly colored pink geraniums which add color from afar. This year I grouped each herb together which I am thinking will be more successful than in the past when I spread them out for aesthetics. I am truly about function not form here, even though I still think they look very pretty. I hope this inspires you to plant some hers in window boxes or pots and cook fresh and flavorful food at home! In the back of the house we have a lot of tree coverage which means I need together a little creative to get color back there.
I used to do Impatiens but in recent years they've had fungus issues and last year we discovered that the chickens like to eat the buds which made them pretty useless for me other than a chicken buffet! I have also tried bogonia but they get very woody by the end of the season. Coleus come in so many pretty shades and I love to mix and match them to provide color even into the fall. They've always been my mainstay. I thought I would share my holiday planters with you!
A couple years ago I went to a craft store the day after Christmas and bought a bunch of dogwood, berries and poinsettias half off to use in my planters. They aren't meant for exterior use but they hold up well-enough to get a few years out of. |
